Megaranger is just that good.Ĭompared to my older work not a lot of terms and names have changed. You’re gonna laugh, cry, and laugh again. I can’t really say what it is myself, but I hope you all enjoy this show, and find that spark for yourself. There’s something about it that makes it really unique and enjoyable. But Megaranger has this spark that sets it apart from other Super Sentai. It was an interesting premise, and the high school thing hadn’t been done since Turboranger in 1989. They fought against the twisted Nezirezia using their new powers, all while juggling school life, and being superheroes. It was about 5 high school students who turn into characters from a popular arcade game. In 1997 Denji Sentai Megaranger aired as the 21st entry in the Super Sentai Series. But you guys don’t care about that, you wanna hear all about Megaranger! I’ve come along way since that boring summer afternoon, and it’s all thanks to this show. It means just as much to me as Zyuranger does, and I hold it very close to my heart. Zyuranger might have been the first Sentai I ever saw, but Megaranger holds the honor of being the first show I ever subbed. So you can probably imagine that this is a very special show to me. Because of Megaranger I’ve gotten to do a lot of really fun things, and talk to a lot of great people. Along the way I learned a lot about subtitling, and the Sentai fandom as a whole.
A little over a year and a half later I had scrubbed 23 episodes of Megaranger. It was then that I desperately hoped someone would fix up the subtitles for Megaranger, and a few moments later I decided to do it myself. The breaking point came when the monster of the week was subtitled as HachiNejire with a little sign at the top of the screen telling me that Hachi was Japanese for Bee. I was watching episode 7 of Megaranger, and I was getting quite frustrated at the quality of the subtitles. It all started one boring summer day in 2011.
This project has been a goal of mine for quite some time.

This episode acts as a stealth kickstart back into the plot as well, as Nezirezia deals with the fact that, guess what…it’s been 30 episodes and they’ve not gotten very far into that whole ‘conquering Earth’ thing. And this episode explores 2 very different teams trying 2 very different forms of teamwork. It’s how 5 high-school kids (and a researcher desperate to not have to work) fight the forces of Nezirezia. Teamwork is a pretty prominent theme in Megaranger.

She’s got a few things to say about this episode because I’m too full of Pokemon hype to write up a proper post. Now I’m gonna turn things over to our editor, Alkaid.
They all seem to care about each other, with the exception of Girell but who likes him? Pay attention to Shiborena and Hinelar’s reactions to Girell’s actions in this episode and you’ll see what I mean. When I watched this I really got the sense that the main group of Nezirezia are like a family. This is a pretty great episode about team bonds, and not just for our heroes. This week, Shun gets amnesia! Girell does… Girell things! And Yugande is kinda lame (Sorry Capt. Go grab some popcorn, maybe a nice drink too, and enjoy this little “movie.” I don’t want to spoil anything, but Galaxy Mega is a true bro. Megaranger has always put a heavy focus on it’s mecha and these two episodes put even more focus on them. While the villains are outstanding, the real hero of this “movie” is Galaxy Mega. Hinelar is not a man you want to cross under any circumstances and Girell is about to learn that lesson. On the flip side you have Girell who just used Yugande for exactly that in the last episode. He’s the kind of mad scientist who takes pride in his inventions and doesn’t think of them as simply tools for conquest and destruction. Hinelar is amazing in these episodes, and he’s easily earned a top spot on my favorite villains list. Last week we saw that Nezirezia had a bit of a family bond, and these episode only further that. If these two aren’t #1 then they are incredibly close.

And I am dead serious when I say these are some of the best episodes of a Sentai series I have ever seen. It’s one of those things that just reminds why I love Tokusatsu so much. There’s some amazing set pieces and model work here that is just mind blowing.

I highly recommend you watch these two episodes both back to back like a movie for maximum enjoyment.
